Empower future leaders in writing strong board papers in the energy transformation sector

Our client’s situation

An organisational capability team needed to support its future leaders in writing for decision making and reporting on complex projects in the rapidly changing energy sector.

Our solution

We customised Write to influence modules for the group of 24 future leaders using model examples from its business areas. The group built confidence in crafting strategic messages on energy transformation projects and in presenting content for decision making to the Board.

Our client’s response

‘Thank you so much for facilitating these sessions with our Leadership program cohort. I’ve received excellent feedback about the coaching and how the group has progressed. I’m so looking forward to seeing this impact on the business (especially as we are in peak board reporting time!). We look forward to working with you again in the future!’

Hannah O, Principal Organisational Capability Advisor, CS Energy (Queensland)

Uplift briefing note skills in a legal and governance division

Our client’s situation

A NSW Government division needed to lift the quality of its briefing notes to support decision making and its expanding role in the wider department.

Our solution

We developed model examples of the division’s content and live online Sharpen your briefing notes and Make your words count training modules. We trained the division’s lawyers, governance officers and policymakers in how to focus their thinking, refine their messages and prepare clear, concise and well-argued briefing notes.

Our client’s response

‘This was the best training I have completed while in government. The content was directly relevant to my work and immediately applicable. Julie was an excellent facilitator. She used an array of tools and impressive communication skills to ensure I remained engaged throughout.’

Lucy L, Principal Legal Officer,
NSW Government agency

03

Refresh news and storytelling skills in a new media team

Our client’s situation

A media manager in the local government had a newly-formed team with different skill sets. The team needed to create consistent and engaging media, communications and consultation content.

Our solution

We audited the team’s content, messaging and audience focus. We provided a 1-day in-house Telling our stories well module to energise the team and create fresh story angles for different content formats.

Our client’s response

‘Julie, you’re the best in the business. Thank you again for this training program. The team really loved it. We reference your session daily and are already putting much of it to action.’

Alex C, Media Manager,
Metropolitan Council (NSW)

04

Refocus a consultation paper on new legislation to reach a wider audience

Our client’s situation

A complex discussion paper on new land compensation laws was about to open for public consultation. The consultation team needed to ensure the paper clearly explained the legal issues and encouraged as much public feedback as possible.

Our solution

We worked with the team to focus the paper, group the content and apply thematic headings and takeaway messages. The content was edited to create a clear modern tone and meet a reading grade of 10 – all without compromising accuracy or legal meaning.

Our client’s response

‘Absolutely stellar job. I’m so glad you were able to work with us, Julie. I know the team appreciated learning from the changes you made to put our big wordy sentences into plain language. Thank you!’

Sally F, Project Director, NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure

05

Prepare future leaders on how to pitch and present under pressure

Our client’s situation

A future leaders group needed to develop skills in preparing presentations, media releases and reports in a time-pressed competition setting.

Our solution

We created a bespoke in-person module, The confident communicator. We coached the group in how to give an effective pitch, shape content quickly to suit different formats, and nuance messages on current media topics.

Our client’s response

‘I was impressed by the clarity of content, level of engagement, flow and contextualisation. The tips provided would be valuable to any manager or subject matter expert needing to prepare a report within council. The workshop seems to also have helped to build the team – a very positive outcome. They are chattering a lot more in Microsoft Teams and I can see direct application of what you relayed in what they are going to be presenting to the executive leadership team.’

Gaby D, Organisational Development Lead,
Local Council, Greater Sydney region (NSW)

06

Teach a multi-disciplinary team to craft stronger proposals and reports

Our client’s situation

A global consultancy wanted to ensure its subject experts represent critical research in a smart, focused and engaging format for its business, industry and government partners.

Our solution

We developed online training modules for its environmental scientists, policy experts and economists in Australia, Singapore, the US and UK. Groups learned to communicate key messages, apply a conclusion-first approach and present complex findings in a business and government reporting context.

Our client’s response

‘Julie’s sessions have been among the most valuable investments we’ve made in training for our teams.’

Nick C, Associate Director, Aither (Ricardo)

‘Great course. I’ve done a number of these over the years. This has been the first one which evidences really strong engagement with the Dept Exec and the presenter. Julie really did her homework and was obviously well briefed. The confidence and authority she brought to the course were outstanding.’

Senior reviewer, Regional Development and Programs, NSW Government

‘The workshop was excellent. I am often a bit hesitant about communication skills workshops as I am quite obsessive about writing (grammar, style, content etc) and find myself disagreeing with some of what is presented or finding it too simplistic. I thoroughly enjoyed the workshop, I learned a lot and I am confident it will improve my (and my team’s) writing.’

‘Sharing my work with non-academic audiences is increasingly important. Julie helped me simplify complex material and communicate better with all audiences. She taught me how to cut back and streamline my writing. To write for others, not myself.‘

Dr Robert Heirene, Research Fellow, University of Sydney

‘Julie’s inspiring workshops have sparked positive change for our organisation and strengthened our brand’s engagement with its audiences.’
